Few sites can claim to capture humanity’s best—and worst—sides in the way that YouTube can. It’s been charged with changing the outcome of elections, serving as the catalyst for arrests, and creating a new brand of celebrity.
Of course, many of the most popular videos don’t have this kind of social impact. They’re just two or three minutes of madcap fun—or displays of exceptionally strange (but captivating) talents that people have honed for the camera.
And that’s where Best of YouTube comes in (check out my original review here). If you can’t be bothered to dig through the millions of videos to find the little gems of ingenuity and hilarity, you can count on this podcast to do the heavy lifting for you.
The curator of this fantastic little podcast is Lars Thorn, and he shared his thoughts about the process—and the product.
There are millions of YouTube videos—do you have a process that you use to select the ones you put on the podcast? How long does it take you to find a good video?
The videos that are selected for the podcast have to pass through several stages before it becomes an episode on the Best of YouTube podcast. These stages involves first a submission to the website bestofyoutube.com. If successful there it will be posted to the website and be available for voting. The producers behind the top voted videos on the website are contacted and permission to feature the clip as a podcast is provided to Plankton Productions. After that a new episode is born.
The time to find good videos can vary anytime from 30 seconds to 1 hour. The suggestions that are received on the website are very helpful in this process.
Have you found that there are particular kinds of videos or themes that tend to get the biggest reaction or are the most popular?
The most popular clips that people seem to like are the ones were the person watching gets impressed by what it is going on. The top ever downloaded podcast episode is at the moment a bicycle that continues its bike ride without the driver.
Do you know how many people download the podcast each week or month?
At the company we are very happy with the success of the podcast. It has been among the top 10 downloaded podcasts on iTunes the past year and we hope that the numbers keep on growing.
Can you tell me about any specific goals you might have for the podcast?
The goal is to provide great content our viewers. We have some new features coming on the website and we are looking to increase the number of podcasts per week.
Is there anything else you'd like people to know about the Best of YouTube podcast that I didn't ask?
The website is planned to undergo significant change and make the user voting/submitting experience a whole lot more interesting and interactive. We are really looking forward to this.
